This hand painted Canterbury Cathedral Chess Set is based on Canterbury which has been a place of Christian worship for nearly two thousand years. Originally a settlement in the South East Corner of England it was developed by Romans into a thriving city. As the Roman Empire fell into decline the Saxon raiders burned and pillaged the city and the few Christians that were found were put to death. At the time that Canterbury Cathedral was built, it was probably the most famous pilgrimage church in northern Europe as it housed the shrine and relics of St Thomas. The revenue from the many pilgrims was channelled by the monks into the creation of a remarkable building, the first Gothic cathedral in England. The rebuilding and reconstruction continued during the following century which ensured that at the end of the Middle Ages, Canterbury Cathedral was one of the noblest churches in Christendom. The skilled designers and sculptors have created this beautiful chess set from the architecture and statuary in and around the Cathedral, producing a chess set of gracious proportions and great detail. The characters in this hand painted chess set all have strong connections with the Cathedral.
